The Benefits of 420 Chrome Stainless Steel Coiled Spring Pins
In applications requiring a combination of high strength, superior fatigue life, and corrosion resistance, 420 martensitic chrome stainless steel offers a host of technical benefits and provides an overall robust cost-effective solution.
A major manufacturer of surgical tools required a means to automatically install a miniature pin. Miniature pins (i.e. less than ø2 mm OD and 10 mm in length) are very difficult to manipulate by hand.
Model CR Pin Installation Machine
SPIROL standard Model CR and enhanced work station and Touch Screen HMI controller
Fixture designed for holding the surgical tool assembly in place
In order to meet the specific clean room process specifications, a standard SPIROL Pin Insertion machine was reconfigured to incorporate acceptable materials, finishes, and operator interface that resulted in a functional "work station" for their assembly environment. Inert (300 series) stainless steel, and Delrin® TM polymer was used for all machine components that came in direct contact with the product. Electro-less nickel plating and white epoxy paint were employed in all other non-contact areas. An Allen-Bradley® Touch Screen HMI was integrated in place of conventional buttons and switches, and an ergonomic adjustable table was provided to mount all machine components and to accommodate operator comfort.
Additional equipment features include:
• Pin Installation force monitoring
• Installed depth sensing
• Soft start pneumatic system
• External control system access port for data acquisition
• Infrared safety light curtain with full perimeter guarding
All SPIROL Standard Installation Machines can be similarly enhanced to meet the needs of your specific application.
SPIROL offers complimentary Application Engineering support. We will assist on new designs as well as help resolve issues, and recommend cost savings on existing designs.
