The Benefits of 420 Chrome Stainless Steel Coiled Spring Pins

In applications requiring a combination of high strength, superior fatigue life, and corrosion resistance, 420 martensitic chrome stainless steel offers a host of technical benefits and provides an overall robust cost-effective solution.

Automotive Chassis Frame Bracket

A customer was originally using a piece of cut tubing as a spacer used to support two plates in an automotive front end assembly. The tubing was cut to the proper length, placed between the two plates and then welded in place. Due to the fact that a 16mm bolt is passed through the ID of the tubing, the ID needed to be burr free. In the process of cutting the tubing to length, a burr is left on the ID. Therefore, in order to meet the quality requirements, a secondary operation of deburring the ID needed to be added to the process. This added a great deal of cost to the cut tubing.

Standard SPIROL Spacers

SPIROL Engineering recommended a standard, butted-seam Spacer to replace the more expensive cut tubing in this application. SPIROL's roll-formed Spacers have clean cut, square ends, therefore no secondary operations are required to ensure a burr free part.

As this was an automotive application, our Spacer had to under go numerous tests to ensure the strength would meet the requirements previously set. The Spacer was eventually approved.

By recommending a butted seam, roll-formed Spacer in this application, the customer was able to save a significant amount of money. The cost of the cut tubing (with the secondary deburring operation) was $0.47 per piece. The price for the butted-seam Spacer was $0.17 per piece. This resulted in an overall savings of $200,000 per year.
