SPIROL Introduces New Precision Machined Compression Limiters to Protect Plastic Assemblies

SPIROL is pleased to introduce the new Series CL6000 lightweight, lead-free, Aluminum Precision Machined Compression Limiters. Compression Limiters are designed to reinforce high stress joints in plastic assemblies where bolts are used to connect two components to each other.

Garage Door Window Trim

A leading door and window manufacturer approached SPIROL with a design improvement request. The company manufactures doors and windows that utilize traditional vinyl window trim commonly seen in metal exterior doors. The manufacturer was assembling their product with self-tapping screws and then plugging the interior hole for cosmetic purposes. The manufacturer recognized that this manufacturing and assembly process was less than ideal. The customer required a high clamping force to hold both sides of the trim together in the event of an attempted break-in by prying the trim off the window.

Fetter Barbed Pin

SPIROL performed an extensive engineering evaluation of the customer’s current design and performance requirements and recommended a custom-designed bi-directional Fetter Barbed Pin. This pin allows both halves of the window trim to be pressed together without tapping. Using this method, there is no interior hole on the trim to plug after assembly. The pin provided such a strong joint that the trim would break if a burglar attempted to pry off the exterior trim.

SPIROL’s custom-designed Fetter Barbed Pin is specifically designed for installation in plastic and once installed it can not be removed without damaging the host component. Due to the fact that these pins will be protected by design within a water-tight gasket once assembled, stainless steel was not necessary; therefore, SPIROL recommended a low carbon steel pin with a zinc plate for added rust protection.

Based on SPIROL’s recommendation, the window manufacturer was able to significantly improve its operations by simplifying the assembly operation. While the Fetter Barbed Pin was marginally higher in cost than the self-tapping screw, the total manufactured cost of the end product was reduced due to the decrease in assembly time and the elimination of the interior plug. As an additional benefit, the end product was enhanced both from its resistance to burglars, and also from an aesthetic point of view.
