Knurled Solid Pins
SPIROL’s Knurled Pins are manufactured with two different knurl types: straight knurls and helical knurls. Unlike a Straight Pin, where retention is provided by the uniform interference between the pin and hole, Knurled Pins are designed to cut into the host. The displacement of the host material into the valleys of the knurls yields more frictional contact area between the Knurled Pin and hole; thus resulting in higher retention. Solid Pins with retention features such as knurls and barbs allow for wider hole tolerances than Solid Pins without retention features (i.e. Straight Pins).
Straight Knurled Pins have lower insertion forces than Helical Knurled Pins and offer resistance to turning within the assembly. However, Straight Knurled Pins provide limited retention when axially loaded. Therefore, straight knurls are often recommended when the Knurled Pin is used to transmit torque such as when used as an axle to rotate a wheel.
With Helical Knurled Pins, a 30° helical knurl causes the pin to rotate as it enters the hole creating more surface contact with the host than straight knurls. This results in higher frictional forces, greater engagement and improved resistance to back out.
If installation equipment is required, SPIROL also offers a standard comprehensive line of Pin Installation Equipment from manual to fully automatic modules, with or without out fixturing, to support your Solid Pin assembly requirements.
