SPIROL Introduces New Precision Machined Compression Limiters to Protect Plastic Assemblies

SPIROL is pleased to introduce the new Series CL6000 lightweight, lead-free, Aluminum Precision Machined Compression Limiters. Compression Limiters are designed to reinforce high stress joints in plastic assemblies where bolts are used to connect two components to each other.

Steel Door Latch Mounting Plate

A leading latch manufacturer approached SPIROL with a design / production concern regarding a new assembly.

The manufacturer designed a compartment door latch housing to mate with a mounting plate which would hold the latch securely in the door. The current design relied on four self-tapping screws to fasten the steel mounting plate to the zinc die-cast latch body. The customer recognized that the self tapping screws were not the optimal choice for manufacturing efficiency during mass production. The customer indicated that once joined, the housing and the mounting plate did not need to be disassembled for servicing.

After a technical review of the performance requirements, SPIROL Engineering recommended its standard Series FH300 Flat Headed Helical Knurled Pin that would provide maximum pullout resistance, and could easily be fed and oriented, facilitating automated assembly with a relatively simple installation machine.

SPIROL’s Headed Knurled Pins provide an excellent alternative to screws when simplification of assembly is desired and permanent assembly is acceptable. The customer’s host material of die-cast zinc is an ideal match for SPIROL’s low carbon steel pin. Since this component would not be exposed to significant atmospheric corrosion, SPIROL recommended our most cost effective surface treatment for mildly corrosive environments of phosphate and rust preventive oil coating. This surface treatment offers 72 hours to base metal corrosion.

SPIROL offered the customer the ideal permanent joining solution and recommended both the hole depth and hole diameter in order to maximize pin performance and component longevity over the life of the application. Furthermore SPIROL’s solution can be easily automated offering optimum manufacturing efficiency and lowering the total installed cost of the door latch assembly.

Our staff of engineers will review your application needs and work with your design team to recommend the best solution.
