Cosmetic Case
A metal pin is used as a hinge pin in a plastic cosmetic case.
PRIOR SOLUTION:
Two Solid Pins were used as hinge pins in a styrene case.
The Solid Pins were causing squeaking in the styrene plastic case. The overriding weakness of the Solid Pins was that they relied on deformation of the plastic for retention, adding stress to the host material. It was necessary for the holes to be misaligned to retain the Solid Pins. Pressure caused by the misalignment, and Solid Pins bending, both contributed to squeaking.
SPIROL SOLUTION:
A SPIROL® Series 550 Cosmetic Coiled Pin was selected as the appropriate solution to eliminate the squeaking. The plastic molding customer was willing to modify the existing hole size to achieve the proper friction fit. In addition, redesigning the hole allowed a standard Series 550 Cosmetic Coiled Pin to be used, further reducing cost.
It is unnecessary to misalign holes when using a Cosmetic Coiled Pin. Uniform radial spring force results in controlled hinge movement. The inherent design of the Series 550 Cosmetic Coiled Pin allows it to flex and absorb impact preventing premature damage to the hole wall. This feature means the quality of the hinge is maintained throughout the life of the product, and prevents the lid from flopping.
